The idea of Meta-Curriculum as a common national curriculum
Curriculum Perspectives, Vol.9(4), pp.79-88
1989
Abstract
I attempt to do two things in this short article: first I want to show how and why any move towards the development of a compulsory common national curriculum (whether as a 'core' or in some other form) must be premised upon agreed aims and criteria for the whole curriculum; and second, that a promising alternative to specifying the core curriculum in terms of what parts of what school subjects are taught to whom and when, is to use a form of meta-curriculum. Before dealing with those main points, however, the background to the whole move towards some kind of a core curriculum is relevant, because these ideas are currently contextualised by the decisions which are already being taken at Commonwealth and State levels.
