Abstract

The choice of the Swan River as Western Australia’s first European colony has confounded modern ecologists but may have had a sound basis — Homo sapiens ’ deep-seated habitat preference for open landscapes with scattered trees. If so, what power might that preference have over our ability to perceive landscape degradation? Is there potential for ecological information to further inform our aesthetic judgement and so to enhance the prospects of appropriate management and restoration?
