Abstract

The Curriculum Development Centre's discussion paper, 'Core Curriculum for Australian Schools', under a forward by Malcolm Skilbeck, has been widely circulated and much discussed over the past six months. Most of the discussion has centred around the definition of the notion of core curriculum and how it might be developed; little appears to have been said so far about the implications of adopting a core curriculum as such, regardless of how it might be defined and developed in detail. Thus it is my concern here to raise some of the issues implicit in the adoption of any kind of a core curriculum, rather than to continue the debate about the content of an Australian core in particular...
