Abstract
In 1964, at eighteen, I left Fiji on a colonial government scholarship to read History and English (with minors in Political Science and Geography) at Victoria University of Wellington. I was one of five students (two others on scholarship) who opted for this university during our final year at what was then called the multiracial sixth at Suva Grammar School. The scholarship was generous and similar to the one that took Vidia Naipaul to Oxford.
