Tourism-protected area partnerships: stoking the fires of innovation
Journal of Sustainable Tourism, Vol.17(2), pp.129-132
2009
Abstract
Partnerships, including protected area-tourism partnerships, have been the subject of intense scrutiny by researchers and practitioners alike for the last decade. As part of the “corporatist model” focused on perceived efficiency gains and a reduction in reliance on public funding, the private sector has become a popular partner, especially with governments of countries like the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. Collaborations with other stakeholders, such as community members, conservation non-government organisations and others with indigenous and environmental interests, are also now central to current approaches to strategic planning (Hall, 1999).
