Abstract

There is something of a backlash, reflected in the 1988 Education Reform Act, towards multi‐faith approaches in religious studies because many people fear that this will have the effect of encouraging either scepticism or religious relativism. Inadequate epistemologies underlying some of these approaches justify the concern. It is argued that this is not inevitable, but that an approach to multi‐faith studies can be formulated which enables students to experience the full impact of the absolutist claims which religions make, and to make an informed decision about them.
