There is no uniform, standardized recommendation on the optimal inspired fraction of oxygen (FiO2) during human anaesthesia and the topic is debated in the literature (Mattishent et al. 2019). Although the use of high FiO2 (≥0.8) has been associated with increased incidence and severity of atelectasis, it does not appear to affect the occurrence of pneumonia, respiratory failure, postoperative pulmonary complications, admission to intensive care unit, length of hospital stay, short-term mortality (Lim et al. 2021) or surgical site infections (El Maleh et al. 2023).
