Similarities and differences: Our students learn from both

Abstract
Spencer describes her surprise at discovering that teaching at a historically black college prepared her more than she realized for the challenge of teaching a highly diverse student population in New York City. She realized that the similarities between people are as important as the differences, and that everyone, regardless of heritage, is a unique individual.
