Abstract

seagrass restoration mangrove restoration polyhydroxyalkanoate PHA biodegradable bioplastic 3D printing open software blue carbon
Design package for a two-part 3D printed anchor pod made from polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), a biodegradable bioplastic, to support seagrass and mangrove restoration. The pod features a spiked perforated cone base filled with local sediment for anchoring and an open cage dome that protects the plant while allowing light and water flow. It requires no adhesives or fasteners, prints on standard desktop 3D printers, and is designed to degrade in situ once the plant is established. The design package consists of three STL mesh files and a two-sheet engineering drawing (PDF, drawn 02/07/2026), shared openly for users to produce, adapt, and deploy the design locally because no single pod geometry suits every site, species, or sediment. Adaptation requires only basic mesh or CAD editing and a desktop 3D printer.
