The importance of community and connection: Supporting Indigenous students through a changing higher education landscape

Abstract
The Covid-19 pandemic catalysed significant changes to higher education, both economically and structurally. The physical university campus and face-to-face learning is in an unprecedented state of uncertainty; leaving campus-based students and staff prepared to transition online, at short notice. This uncertainty has impacted Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at Murdoch University in Western Australia, the majority of whom prefer campus-based learning and rely on the university’s Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre for cultural, social, academic, financial and – importantly – infrastructure support. In response to the challenges of the pandemic, Kulbardi rapidly adapted its philosophy and strategy to focus more acutely on community and connection as students navigate the uncertain present and changing future of higher education.
