Abstract
THE Apostle Paul had several ways of describing how Christ had achieved salvation for humankind. For instance, Paul states that Christ ‘died for our sins’ as an ‘atoning sacrifice’ (1 Cor 15:3; Rom 3:24-25), thereby ‘reconciling’ sinners to himself (2 Cor 5:19). But Paul also thought of Christ as the ‘Last Adam,’ whose obedience had recovered the glorious image of God—the image that Adam’s transgression had disfigured (Rom 5:12-21; 1 Cor 15:45-49). This latter way of conceiving Christ’s accomplishment had far- reaching implications for Paul, and it can be seen to be at work even in passages that do not explicitly mention an Adam-Christ typology.
