Abstract
LACHLAN Macquarie, governor of New South Wales from 1810 to 1821, has left prolific imprints on Australia. In his own time he gave his name to two rivers, a sub-Antarctic island and Sydney's most impressive street. In our own day the list extends to a bank, a Canberra suburb, a university and a dictionary.
