Shashi Tharoor’s An Era of Darkness is a timely and welcome study that meticulously lays out the manipulative extraction in which the Raj engaged to make India’s GDP tumble from 23 percent to 3 percent after its plunder on the subcontinent concluded with a hasty exit. While the accessible tone, minute details, and overall argument render Tharoor’s book a formidable read, at times Tharoor seems short sighted on the sheer magnitude that the racialization and sexualisation of colonized people had on so- called British subjects...
