Music can stimulate, soothe, get us moving and sometimes it can give us a banging headache. It also offers potential as therapy for stroke patients.
GotRhythm is a mobile phone app developed by the University of Western Australia. Researchers at Murdoch University want to find out if it can help improve brain function and movement in people who have suffered a stroke. The research has been funded and supported by the Brain Foundation.
Neuroscientist Dr Ann-Maree Vallence will study 20 chronic stroke patients who will carry out everyday tasks in time with music and have their brain function tested before and after each session. She is excited about the concept of a program patients could use at home.
