Abstract

There has been considerable activity in the study of the law of evidence in recent times, not a little of it attributable to Peter Gillies himself. The Law Reform Commission's Interim (No. 26, 1985) and Final (No. 38, 1987) Reports on Evidence have stimulated considerable interest; note for example the swift and favourable response in the New South Wales Law Reform Commission's Evidence Report (No. 56, 1988). New textbooks have appeared by Ligertwood, Australian Evidence (Butterworths, 1988) and Gillies himself, Law of Evidence in Australia (Legal Books, 1987) as well as a book by a former justice of the South Australian Supreme Court (Wells, Evidence and Advocacy (Butterworths, 1988)). The time is therefore no doubt ripe for a new, up-to-date casebook.
