Abstract
In his time on the South Australian Supreme Court (from May 1970 to June 1984) Mr Justice Wells made a significant contribution to the development of the law of evidence in Australia in judgments which were all the more impressive for being so well written. There are strong echoes of Mr Justice Wells' time on the Bench in this book. (Compare, for example, his recommendation of "Wigmore's little known . . . masterpiece The Science of Judicial Proof (p. 10) with that book's description as a "masterly exegesis—too little known" in the joint judgment in In Re Van Beelen (1974) 9 S.A.S.R. 163 at 194.)
