Abstract
Situated at the heart of a modern Chinese department store, Shopping Mall depicts a businessman framed between the doors of an elevator which are decorated with the image of an artificial forest. Unlike traditional landscape and wilderness photographs that depict nature as an aesthetic object, Talhy’s work shows the simulation of nature in an unsustainable shopping mall. Her research takes a critical and ironic stance, questioning the environmental impact of modern consumerism.
Shopping Mall was published in Photography and Landscape, a critical photography book co-authored by Rod Giblett and Juha Tolonen, and published by Intellect in May 2012. Talhy’s work prompted further analysis on the relationship between photography and landscape, and her photography was central to the discussion about sustainability in the Giblett’s final chapter titled Photography for Environmental Sustainability (pp. 234-238).
The book publication, Photography and Landscape, is part of Intellect’s Critical Photography series. In his final chapter, Giblett makes a case for Talhy’s photograph as an example of a new form of photography for environmental sustainability writing that “Talhy’s photograph marks the end of the journey in this book from the birth of photography in landscape and portrait photography to perhaps the rebirth of photography, the photography for earthly symbiosis” (Giblett, 2012, p.238).
