Abstract

The Southern Communities Advocacy, Legal and Education Service Inc (SCALES) strongly supports the introduction of a Human Rights Act. SCALES is a community legal centre based in Rockingham. The centre was established by Murdoch University in partnership with the local community. SCALES provides legal advice, information and representation to low income people living in the Kwinana and Rockingham areas. It also provides representation to tenants appearing in Magistrates Court and Refugees and Asylum Seekers through its advanced Clinical Legal Education programs. SCALES also hosts Murdoch University's Clinical Legal Education Program. As part of the program, students actively participate in the legal practice at SCALES under the close supervision of the program's supervising practitioners. We are deeply committed to fostering a culture of human rights in predominantly two ways: 1. To further the understanding and application of human rights in all the legal work that we do 2. To instill in our students an understanding and appreciation of human rights.
