Abstract

The arrest of a Perth teenager in Bali for suspected possession of cocaine meant a panicked night for his family, given that under Indonesian law he could face penalties from years of imprisonment to the firing squad. It now appears the powder was only paracetemol, but the incident has again raised the question of whether Indonesia’s draconian laws are as much about politics as they are about a genuine problem.
