Abstract

Geoffrey Bolton was born on Bulwer Street in Perth, overlooking Perth Oval. He went on to win a scholarship to Wesley College and pursued his love of history at the University of Western Australia. He says he his honours thesis on Alexander Forrest (because his statue was opposite Geoffrey's tram stop at the time) and his study of the Forrest family ignited his interest in the Kimberley, where he also travelled to do research. Bolton went on to complete a DPhil at Balliol College at Oxford University, writing a thesis on the union of England and Ireland. He returned to Australia in 1957, where he had a long academic career at the Australian National University, Monash, the University of Queensland, was the Foundation Professor of History at Murdoch University in 1973. Bolton retired from academia in 1996 and served as the Chancellor of Murdoch University from July 2002 to November 2006.
