Abstract

This study details the results of the second year (2006-2007) of the annual monitoring program for fish and freshwater crayfish communities in Samson Brook and Harvey River that receive Ecological Water Provisions (EWP) from Samson Dam (Node 1), Samson Pipehead Dam (Node 2) and Stirling Dam. The major aims of the study were to: Assess fish recruitment and seasonal migration patterns of those native populations receiving EWP from the Samson, Samson Pipehead, and Stirling Dams by determining trends in key biological parameters such as migration patterns, densities, distributions, population demographics, and reproductive condition. Determine whether fish and freshwater crayfish community components of the EWR in these systems continue to be adequately met by their specific EWP. Compare the results of this sampling program to the previous years in terms of fish population sustainability. If appropriate, recommend any further refinements to the EWP regime from these dams to increase their efficiency (in terms of water use) and effectiveness in sustaining fish and crayfish populations.
