Non-indigenous species (NIS) are those living outside of their natural range. Some of these species have negative impacts, including the displacement of native species, reduction of biodiversity and ecosystem processes and economic losses through fouling. The most common vectors for transportation are via hull fouling and ballast water, and so the global movement of ships and artificial substrates associated with ports make these areas hotspots for invasions. A range of ecological engineering interventions, including the seeding of biota to substrates, are increasingly used to mitigate the impacts on NIS. The aims of this study were to: (i) collate existing information on the NIS that occur in Perth metropolitan waters and investigate the substrate type preference of NIS from the artificial reef trials conducted by Cronin-O’Reilly et al. (2025); and (ii) investigate the potential application of ‘pre-seeding’ infrastructure with native fauna and/or flora to minimise NIS establishment on port infrastructure by assessing current knowledge available.
