Abstract

This research explores the perinatal wellbeing of mothers working in the paid labour force. In particular it focuses on: •work and identity; •the transition into the workplace after birth; •the decision-making process in returning to work; •attitudes towards motherhood; •support networks available to women; •access and utilisation of services. The project was funded by the Western Australian State Perinatal Mental Health Research Program and administered and overseen by the Western Australian Centre for Research for Women. Women who were in the paid workforce for sixteen hours or more and were pregnant and/or had a child less than two years of age were recruited through a variety of means to participate in the research. Twenty-two women were interviewed and asked about a range of issues relating to working and motherhood including reasons for working, maternity leave and work arrangements as well as services, support networks and psychological and emotional wellbeing. Finally, the women were asked about the types of services that would assist with managing work and motherhood. In addition to the interviews, women were also asked to complete the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and Maternal Anxiety Separation Scale.
