Abstract

Play is fundamental to children’s learning and development, health and wellbeing, participation, and their sense of being and belonging. Yet ensuring that play is meaningfully embedded within Western Australian schools requires more than acknowledgement of its importance. It requires supportive policy, informed leadership, professional capability, adequate time, space and resources, and a collective commitment to safeguarding children’s opportunities to play. On 3 October 2026, the Early Childhood Excellence Conference 2026, Future Ready Begins with Play: At the Heart of Early Childhood, was held at Murdoch University (MU) and co-hosted by Network Teach, Play Matters Collective and MU School of Education. The conference focused on how play provides a foundation for children to thrive in a rapidly changing world while remaining grounded in evidence, policy and practice.
