Abstract
The Solomon Island Makira Early Childhood Development Program operated from 2005 to 2011 through a partnership between World Vision Solomon Islands (WVSI), and Makira Provincial Government. Working through two phases the program focused on improving literacy and primary school attendance while also including a more holistic approach to child development. Previous research has identified positive outcomes for the program. This study sought to identify the program impact.
A quasi-experimental approach was taken to investigation of impact, looking to compare the performance of children from Makira province who had graduated to school, with the performance of children from a comparable province. This was complemented by additional qualitative research.
Overall the findings provide statistical verification of higher competencies in numeracy and literacy for children who attended the early childhood education program compared to those children who had not had the opportunity to attend the program. Attendance rates were also significantly higher.
The research was limited by sample size and other factors but provides good quality indicative results of the value of the Solomon Island Makira Early Childhood Development Program in improvement in educational results for children in remote areas of the Solomon Islands.
