Abstract

Once gold ore is mined, using underground or open-cut methods, it is sent to the closest mill where it is crushed into a finely grounded paste. This report discusses two methods employed to start up a large synchronous machine used for milling operations in the mining industry. To understand this, basic principles are extracted from the electrical and mechanical engineering fields. The report also explores the common techniques used for communication between engineers involving piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs). The importance of P&IDs and their purpose in the engineering field is also explained. The majority of the Australian and International standards designed specifically for P&IDs are not covered as part of this dossier. This is based heavily on the operations that are being undertaken are in South Africa, where P&ID standards are minimal.
