About me
I chair the undergraduate majors in Sustainable Development and International Aid & Development, and the postgraduate courses in Sustainable Development and Development Studies. Murdoch University was one of the first universities in the world to offer an undergraduate degree in Sustainable Development (we’ve been offering the course since 2000) and also one of the first to provide postgraduate Sustainability courses tailored to professionals’ needs. I’ve been teaching at Murdoch since 1998 and it’s been a great privilege to see these courses evolve. It’s been inspiring sharing ideas with our students and seeing them become the next generation of sustainability leaders.
We now have a high-achieving alumni who are enjoying rewarding careers as change agents within Australia and overseas. Our alumni have worked as Members of Parliament (State and Federal), throughout state government agencies and across local government. Our alumni are making a difference within organisations ranging from large corporations to dynamic global and local NGOs. Other alumni are ecopreneurs who have established successful green businesses.
One of my important roles as Academic Chair is to connect students with our alumni and with our many industry partners. We do this through our courses and by offering our students career-relevant internships with leading organisations and mentors while they study, for academic credit.
In addition to coordinating the University’s sustainability internship programs, I teach courses in urban sustainability and design. I co-coordinate the University’s Tokyo Australia Program, which fosters mutually beneficial collaboration and exchange programs for students from Tokyo City University.
