About me
I am interested in the broader field of environmental management and policy with particular focus on social-ecological systems, climate change adaptation, environmental governance and diplomacy, water resources management, and coastal/delta management. In these fields, I have conducted research in various reputed institutions (such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in North America, Europe, and South Asia. I built extensive collaborations, co-authoring with over 250 scientists.
I published more than 80 articles in high-ranked journals such as Nature, Nature Climate Change, Earth’s Future, Environmental Research Letters. Based on my contribution to the interdisciplinary field of water-related hazards and risks, I received the ‘Outstanding Young Scientists Award 2016’ of the European Geosciences Union, EGU. I am a contributing author of the 6th Assessment Report of the IPCC. I also received prestigious fellowships and grants from multiple funding agencies to pursue my research (e.g., the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellowship of the European Commission and the Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellowship in Germany). I serve as editor-in-chief/executive editor for the journal, Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS, Copernicus) and Australasian Journal of Environmental Management. I was offered a prestigious Canada Research Chair in Water Security at the University of Saskatchewan (valued at approximately $1 million CAD), which I respectfully declined to continue my research at Murdoch. I am ranked among the top 2% of scientists globally (in both 2023 and 2024, according to Scopus/Stanford).
Based on my learning from World-leading institutions, I exemplify research-led teaching. I design and deliver two units at Murdoch: Coastal and Marine Policy and Planning (ENV601) and Social-Ecological Systems (ENV602). I also co-teach two other units: Climate Change Adaptation (ENV680) and Environmental Policy in the 21st Century (ENV616). I also run the New Colombo Plan-funded field unit in Indonesia on 'Governing the Commons'. Prospective PhD and MPhil candidates who meet all requirements and have at least two Q1/Q2 publications as lead author are welcome to contact me if they are interested in my research area.
