About me
Brendan is an Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow at Murdoch University, where his current research on blood flow restricted exercise is funded by an NHMRC Investigator Grant. He received his PhD from the University of Newcastle in 2016, which investigated the effects of hypoxia on acute responses to resistance exercise. He has published >80 scientific articles and 2 book chapters, focused on exercise with systemic hypoxia (simulated altitude) and localised hypoxia (blood flow restriction), as well as optimising methods to monitor athletic training. Brendan has consulted as a sports scientist with elite athletes and officials from a range of sports (including rugby league, Australian rules football, soccer, elite powerlifting), and his work has been used to develop best-practice guidelines for blood flow restriction exercise in elite sporting environments. Brendan currently supervises 8 research students (PhD, Masters and Honours), and has completed 3 PhD, 5 Masters and 12 Honours students.
Brendan is accredited as a Level 2 Sports Scientist with Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA) and is Deputy Chair of the ESSA Research Committee. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, and for Frontiers in Sport and Active Living. He has also been a member of the scientific organising committee for large national conferences (e.g., ESSA’s Research to Practice Conference, 2021), and contributed to peer review of national competitive research grants (e.g., NHMRC and MRFF in Australia).
