About me
I’m a Murdoch University lecturer specialising in the theory and practice of digital two dimensional moving images.
My production experience includes creating nationally-distributed music videos for Australian musicians John Butler Trio, Eskimo Jo, The Waifs, and the Scotch of Saint James, as well as writing, producing, directing, editing, and compositing a multi-award nominated virtual-set short science-fiction film called Cyron (2005). I’ve been a Video-Jockey at live music events supporting international DJs, produced a localised FM radio station for Southbound Music Festival, live video-switched commercial performances and events, and was the producer/director of online Perth local music video channel perthbands.tv.
I’ve been nominated for best editing internationally for the experimental short film, 'Date', that has screened at numerous national and international festivals, as well as national broadcast television.
My 45 minute, independently produced, documentary, 'OurStory: Six Sisters of the Stolen Generation', has screened at multiple significant indigenous cultural events, including Reconciliation Day 2012 and the Wairoa Indigenous Film Festival in New Zealand. It ceased being broadcast on SBS after more than 2 years and 10 screenings.
I did post-production vision for the acclaimed 35-minute indigenous documentary, 'Synergies – Walking Together, Belonging to Country', directed by well-known Murdoch film-maker, Dr Glen Stasiuk. I have worked on indigenous fathering projects in collaboration with UWA researcher, Len Collard, as well as other participatory video production ideas.
My colleague, Dr Owen Beck, and I were successful in being named in ‘The Aussie List 2019" by Warner Bros, The Black List, and Veerhuis Pictures. This is a list of Australia's top 10 emerging feature script-writers. We are currently writing our second feature film.
My PhD topic was YouTube as a medium and the impact of proto-affordances on the significant (r)evolutionary shifts in the evolution of communication technologies. My Medium Theory framework detailing the epochs of Foundation Technologies has since been published in one of the world's leading digital media journals.
Towards the end of 2023 I began researching Artificial Intelligence (AI) in relation to this framework, organised a conference on the future of AI and Screen Production Education, and am currently working on Generative AI video productions. I'm also currently updating my Medium Theory framework to include and describe the progression of AI in communication as expression, AI 1.0, and AI 2.0.
My areas of research interest include spatial montage, artifical intelligence and moving images, technological affordances and media language/grammar, medium theory, online video platforms, stereoscopic video, participatory video, and the evolving genre of video blogging.
I’ve taught in a wide range of screen related areas, including digital video compositing, TV Studio, music video, documentary, film direction, video editing, creativity, script-writing, photography, cinematography, and online video distribution.
