About me
Dr Joyce Muge-Sugutt is a Senior Lecturer in Nursing at Murdoch University with professional commitment to contemporary nursing education, clinical practice, and research, particularly in the areas of ageing, dementia care, and student support. Alongside her academic appointment, she practises as a Registered Nurse and brings extensive experience in aged care, community nursing, and the management of chronic conditions.
Dr Muge-Sugutt holds a Doctorate in Nursing, with research focused on the experiences of family caregivers during the final decision-making process of transitioning an older person living with dementia into long-term residential care. Her work has contributed to nursing education and workforce development by deepening understanding of dementia care, caregiver wellbeing, and ethical decision-making in complex care contexts.
Dr Muge-Sugutt has passion and commitment in the quality of teaching and learning. This encompasses nursing education, curriculum development and innovation, student wellbeing, and workforce sustainability. She is deeply dedicated to curriculum development, with a strong focus on designing and enhancing learning experiences that prepare nursing students for compassionate, complex, and ethical practice.
Beyond teaching and learning, Dr Muge-Sugutt is a Nursing researcher. Her research interests include dementia and ageing-related care, palliative and end-of-life care, chronic illness, disability, and the support of families navigating transitions into residential aged care. She is currently extending this work through postdoctoral research involving the development and evaluation of a navigation toolkit to support older people and their families during this transition.
Dr Muge-Sugutt is dedicated to fostering inclusive, supportive, and compassionate learning environments. She remains deeply committed to preparing future nurses for complex practice settings while maintaining a grounded, practice-informed approach to teaching, research, and professional leadership.
