About me
Professor Peter Eastwood is an Australian biomedical research scientist with an internationally recognised programme in sleep and respiratory physiology. He is currently Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation) at Murdoch University, Western Australia. He has previously held senior leadership roles including Dean of Research of the College of Medicine & Public Health at Flinders University, South Australia, Director of the Flinders Health & Medical Research Institute at Flinders University, Director of the Raine Study and Foundation Director of the Centre for Sleep Science at The University of Western Australia. He has served as President of the Australasian Sleep Association, Deputy Director of the Lung Institute of Western Australia, and Editor-in-Chief of Respirology, the leading respiratory journal in the Asia–Pacific region. His earlier appointments include NHMRC Senior Research Fellow at the West Australian Sleep Disorders Research Institute, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital; Professor in the School of Anatomy and Human Biology at The University of Western Australia; and Adjunct Professor at Curtin University.
Professor Eastwood has published over 260 scholarly outputs, including more than 190 refereed papers, alongside invited reviews, book chapters, editorials and other contributions. He is a regular invited speaker at major national and international scientific meetings. His current h-index is 72 (Google Scholar) and 57 (Scopus). He has secured over $17 million in competitive research funding, including NHMRC project grants and Senior Research Fellowships. He has an extensive track record in research training and supervision, having supervised postdoctoral fellows and higher degree by research candidates across PhD, Masters and Honours levels.
Professor Eastwood has made substantial contributions to research leadership, peer review and policy. He is Immediate Past Editor-in-Chief of Respirology and has served on editorial boards of national and international journals. He has contributed to NHMRC grant assessment processes, including Project Grant and Training Award panels. Internationally, he is a member of the World Sleep Society Global Sleep Health Taskforce and has previously served on its Governing Council. Nationally, he has held leadership roles including President and Treasurer of the Australasian Sleep Association and has contributed to advocacy and policy development in sleep, respiratory and health and medical research. He has also served as a Board member of the Australian Society for Medical Research and national convenor of Medical Research Week.
