About me

Tona Sanchez-Palacios is a Lecturer and Research Fellow at the School of Agricultural Sciences |Food Futures Institute at Murdoch University in Western Australia. Tona's research interests are in crop mineral nutrition and understanding the mechanisms of metal tolerance in plants. Tona has been involved in projects with the Australian mining industry on developing an effective phyto-capping layer to cover mineral waste from mining using fast-growing metal-tolerant plants. Also, Tona has been involved in biofortification projects by increasing the loading of iron into wheat grain using molecular techniques. Most recently, Tona has been involved in producing and testing novel foliar fertilisers that can lead to the enrichment of micronutrients in grains. Tona applies state-of-the-art techniques at the Australian Synchrotron in Vic, and isotopic tracing methods at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation at Lucas Heights, NSW to increase our understanding of the mobility and distribution of foliarly applied fertilisers on crop systems.
