Abstract

FOS: Computer and information sciences
The Innovative Research Universities (IRU) Symposium on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Research Leadership and Support brought together leading experts and thought leaders to explore the opportunities AI presents in transforming research leadership and support processes. Rather than focusing solely on AI's role in advancing research outcomes, the symposium focused on how AI can lift leadership capabilities, improve operational efficiency, and empower support functions critical to research ecosystems. Research leadership and support refers to staff in a research leadership or support role, including current research leaders in the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) portfolio. This includes research development and support, the Office of Graduate Research, College Research Leaders, and Library staff responsible for research support: for example, grants support, performance analysis, library support, research contracts, and ethics and governance. AI technologies offer unprecedented opportunities to maximise staff effectiveness and efficiency and to revolutionise research leadership and governance; their implementation demands thoughtful consideration of ethical implications, regulatory frameworks, and organisational readiness.
