About me
Dr Alys Daroy works across the environmental humanities and ecological arts, specialising in Shakespeare and biophilia. She is Academic Chair of Theatre and Creative Production at Murdoch University and Lecturer in English and Theatre.
She is co-author of Shakespeare, Ecology and Adaptation (Bloomsbury/Arden Shakespeare, 2025) with Paul Prescott and Sydney's Food Landscapes: Agriculture, Planning, Sustainability (Springer/Palgrave Macmillan, 2025) with Joshua Zeunert, shortlisted for the Australian Urban Design Awards. Her third monograph, Biophilic Shakespeare, is under contract with Routledge. She is the recipient of the S. Ernest Sprott Award (University of Melbourne, Faculty of Arts) and is undertaking research through Visiting Fellowships at the Shakespeare Institute (University of Birmingham) and Shakespeare's Globe, London. She has published in journals such as Performance Research, Stanislavsky Studies and Sustainability: Science, Practice and Policy, as well as contributed to several edited volumes.
Alys' creative research has been presented nationally and internationally, including at the European Cultural Centre (Venice Biennale) and FORM Gallery, WA. She is currently developing the Shakespearean eco-adaptation Il Vento with the Conservatorio di Verona. She is Founder of Shakespeare South, Australia's first eco-Shakespeare company, featured in Australia's Culture for Climate Report, and serves on the Board of Come You Spirits. Before academia, Alys worked as an actor and theatre-maker across the UK, Europe and Australia (National Theatre and Sunday Times Ian Charleson Award Commendation).
