Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Academic Writing Instruction
Date presented 08/11/2024
8th International Conference on Modern Research in Education, Teaching and Learning, 08/11/2024–10/11/2024, Bangkok, Thailand
The widespread use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption poses educational challenges for teaching academic writing. While teaching students ethical AI use is imperative, it is equally important to equip them with comprehensive academic writing skills, regardless of their access to AI resources. Considering the swift integration of AI technologies, employers will begin to place growing importance on promoting and emphasising the responsible and ethical application of AI. This presentation will address the integration of AI in teaching essay writing to first-year criminology students. In doing so, an innovative approach to teaching essay writing and educating first-year students on the strengths and limitations of generative AI was taken. Through this process, students were asked to prompt Copilot to produce the theory portion of their essay, uploading it onto the Learning Management System (LMS). Students were then taught to edit, reference, and supplement the material, and document their corrections. By engaging students in collaborative activities focused on ethical AI use, we fostered an inclusive environment. These activities also provided personalised feedback through AI, reducing academic disparities within our diverse cohort and promoting accessibility, inclusivity, and fairness.

Over the years, Africa's share of global investment flows has been much lower compared to other world regions. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) seeks to remedy this through the Investment Protocol, which will include provisions aimed at addressing some of the non-tariff barriers (NTBs) to Africa's investment. As negotiations on the Protocol's provisions continue to take shape, a key area that has received little attention is preferential Rules of Origin (RoO). Most literature on RoO has focused on their impact on trade flows and failed to take note of their role in...

Source-based taxation of e-commerce income: A study of the unresolved issues
Published 2019
Journal of Business Law, 6, 459 - 480
Rapid progressions in cross-border e-commerce has revolutionized international trade and made it possible for businesses to transact in a borderless Internet environment. However, most international tax treaties still apply source-based taxation principles, including the permanent establishment concept, in taxing income derived from international commerce. This article examines whether source-based taxation remains theoretically valid in the territorial taxation of cross-border e-commerce income. It analyses the application of the permanent establishment concept to e-commerce corporate income and reviews some of the existing challenges and the current responses to these challenges at the academic and international level.
