About me

I am a Senior Research Fellow at Murdoch University, with a background in physics and a PhD in Electrical and Microwave Engineering from the University of Queensland. My research investigates how electromagnetic waves interact with biological tissues and how these interactions can support accurate, non-invasive measurement of tissue composition.

My expertise spans microwave sensing, broadband antennas, open-ended coaxial probes, dielectric characterisation, calibration and machine learning. I am particularly interested in the fundamental relationships between sensor geometry, frequency, electromagnetic field distribution and tissue structure, and how these influence sensing depth, sensitivity and measurement uncertainty. My emerging research direction combines electromagnetic modelling with physics-informed artificial intelligence to improve the interpretation and transferability of measurements across species and measurement conditions.

For more than a decade, I have developed and applied microwave measurement methods for live cattle and sheep and for carcasses under research and commercial processing conditions. This work includes predicting fat depth, muscle depth and intramuscular fat, alongside investigating microwave methods for detecting contaminants in meat and characterising other materials.

Through collaborative projects supported by Meat & Livestock Australia, the Australian Meat Processor Corporation and Australian Government Rural R&D for Profit initiatives, I have led microwave research components and contributed to translating research into practical industry applications. I am also a co-founder and director of Advance Microwave Solutions, which manufactures and commercialises microwave carcass measurement systems under a formal licensing agreement with Murdoch University and Meat & Livestock Australia.

My goal is to advance the physical understanding of microwave sensing and develop reliable measurement approaches that connect fundamental engineering research with biological and agricultural challenges. I am a Senior Member of IEEE and Secretary of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society/Microwave Theory and Technology Society Western Australia Joint Chapter.
