THE overriding lesson of Seattle is that the emerging global economy needs a different kind of World Trade Organization - an organization that responds to the fact that we have moved from an international to a global economy, argues Kanishka Jayasuriya. The Seattle Summit of the World Trade Organization (WTO) will be seen as a landmark event in the continuing transformation of the global economy. Though not for the much-touted reason that it signals a reversal in the kind of structural forces that have been shaping the global economy. This is simply untenable.
