Advances in methods and practices in psychological science, 8, 3
Over the past decade, the open-science movement has transformed the research landscape, although its impact has largely been confined to developed countries. Recently, researchers from developing countries have called for a redesign of open science to better align with their unique contexts. However, raising awareness alone is insufficient—practical actions are required to drive meaningful and inclusive change. In this work, we analyze the opportunities offered by the open-science movement and explore the macro- and micro-level barriers researchers in developing countries face when engaging with these practices. Drawing on these insights and aiming to inspire researchers in developing regions or other resource-constrained contexts to embrace open-science practices, we offer a four-level guide for gradual engagement: (a) foundation, using open resources to build a solid foundation for rigorous research; (b) growth, adopting low-cost, easily implementable practices; (c) community, contributing to open-science communities through actionable steps; and (d) leadership, taking on leadership roles or forming local communities to foster cultural change. We further discuss potential pitfalls of the current open-science practices and call for readaptation of these practices in developing countries’ settings. We conclude by outlining concrete recommendations for future action.

Emotion
Emotion regulation and affect are closely linked, but little is known about the directionality of their associations in daily life contexts, there is a particular lack of studies that include positive affect and its upregulation, and numerous methodological limitations constrain conclusions that can be drawn. We tested bidirectional associations of four emotion regulation strategies (distraction, reappraisal, rumination, savoring) with positive and negative affect, using ecological momentary assessment. Adult community participants (N = 345) oversampled for treatment-seeking completed up to six reports per day for 7 days. Residual dynamic structural equation modeling showed that savoring and rumination were bidirectionally associated with positive and negative affect, indicating “virtuous” and “vicious” feedback loops, respectively. Distraction and reappraisal were both predicted by heightened negative affect, and reappraisal also had reciprocal associations with positive affect. Exploratory analyses indicated that clinical status generally did not influence associations between affect and emotion regulation. Results suggest affective cycles associated with repetitive thinking (e.g., rumination and savoring) that may inhibit or support well-being, whereas associations with distraction and reappraisal may depend upon contextual factors.

Emotion dysregulation in insomnia disorder: the possible role of psychiatric comorbidity
Published 2024
Frontiers in sleep, 3, 1383552
Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the link between emotion dysregulation and insomnia disorder as well as the possible role of psychiatric comorbidity on the association. More specifically, the aim was to examine whether the elevations in emotion dysregulation in insomnia are dependent on co-occurring psychiatric comorbidity, in this study defined as anxiety disorders and/or major depression.
Methods: Four diagnostically differing groups with 25 participants in each were recruited: normal sleep, normal sleep with psychiatric comorbidity, insomnia disorder, and insomnia disorder with psychiatric comorbidity. The 100 study participants completed self-report scales and items assessing socio-demographic parameters, symptoms of insomnia, anxiety, and depression, generic emotion regulation, and insomnia-specific emotion regulation.
Results: Concerning generic emotion regulation, the results showed that psychiatric comorbidity, but not insomnia, was associated with elevations in generic emotion dysregulation. Psychiatric comorbidity was distinctly related to elevations in non-acceptance, goals, and impulse domains (d = 1.09–1.22). Regarding insomnia-specific emotion regulation, the findings demonstrated that insomnia, with or without psychiatric comorbidity, was related to heightened use of insomnia-associated emotion dysregulation strategies. Insomnia was uniquely associated with elevated unhelpful beliefs about sleep and safety behaviors (d = 1.00–1.04).
Conclusion: The current findings support the notion that insomnia is associated with specific, but not generic, emotion dysregulation strategies. These results have relevance for the conceptualization of the role of emotion dysregulation in insomnia and the clinical management of insomnia.

Introduction: Psychopathology of adolescents in developing countries such as Bangladesh is a neglected problem, which should get more attention, especially with a focus on finding targets for prevention and intervention. Aim of the study was to study relationships between cognitive emotion regulation strategies and psychopathology in Bengali adolescents.
Methods: The sample consisted of 340 12-to-18-year old adolescents from Bangladesh. The Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) was used to measure cognitive emotion regulation strategies. The SCL-90 was used to measure symptoms of depression, anxiety and hostility. Relationships between CERQ and SCL-90 scales were studied by Multiple Regression Analysis.
Results: With regard to relationships between CERQ strategies and psychopathology: Higher extents of ‘Worry-focused’ cognitive styles appeared to be related to the reporting of more symptoms of psychopathology, while more ‘Reappraisal-focused’ styles were associated with the reporting of less symptoms of psychopathology.
Discussion: The results with regard to the relationships between cognitive emotion regulation strategies and psychopathology may provide possible targets for interventions to improve mental health in adolescents in developing countries.
