As the globe experiences an unprecedented increase in the movement of goods and people, the biosecurity threat from pests and diseases to people's well-being, food and agriculture, the environment, and the economy becomes more significant. Approximately one billion people travel, and over eight billion tons of goods are transported internationally every year. Plant biosecurity is a set of measures that aim to reduce the risk of plant pests and diseases being spread. Quarantine is a subset of biosecurity. Biosecurity is driven by economic, environmental, and social drivers and is governed by detailed international and national frameworks. Effective biosecurity management requires activities across the continuum of preborder, border, and postborder. Biosecurity should be considered a melding of many scientific disciplines.
