When colleagues find out I teach a unit called “Forms of Violence”, someone will inevitably ask, “Wah, Tarin… you going to beat up your students ah?” I laugh… “Erm.. no…quite the opposite. My job is to make sure nobody gets hurt, especially in class”. A small pause. A nervous laugh. Then: “Oh… that must be heavy.”

Over the years, I’ve had many thoughtful conversations with people exploring a career in counselling. Some are students nearing graduation. Others are professionals seeking more meaningful, people-focused work. A few are drawn to the field after their own healing journey...
